Braces don't look or feel much like braces anymore. New materials and techniques have made braces lighter and more comfortable than ever before.
One of the most intriguing developments involves Damon Smile self-ligating braces. You might recall that older style braces involved a lot of wire and rubber bands to keep in place. As teeth moved into their new positions, all that material had to be moved, too. In the meantime, the rubber and wire blocked toothbrushes and floss. In other words, it was really hard to keep teeth clean.
Damon Smile braces eliminate the connecting wires and rubber bands. Instead, one permanent component keeps braces in place. Self-ligation eliminates the need for headgear or external wires in most cases, making these braces a winner in the appearance category, too.
Avoid the Cutting Edge
Traditional braces pose a small but painful risk: you can catch your cheek or gum on the rough edge of the brace wires. Damon Smile braces have a smoother surface that significantly reduces that risk.
Because the braces self-adjust and move with teeth, patients need fewer appointments at our Redlands, CA office. They don’t have to come in for tightening or readjustments. Teeth can move into position faster with self-ligating braces, although this can vary by patient. Patients report the braces are pretty comfortable, too.
More Room to Move
Another thing we like about Damon Smile braces: they actually adapt to the shape of the mouth as teeth change position. As a result, Dr. Byron Diehl won’t have to pull back teeth to create space for crowded front teeth.
If you need braces, you have a lot of options. There’s probably never been a better time to look into having your teeth straightened. Call our Redlands, CA office for guidance on the fastest and most effective way to improve your smile.

After you complete your orthodontic treatment at our Redlands, CA office and have your Damon Smile braces removed, you will most likely be given a retainer to wear by Dr. Byron Diehl. Retainers will help protect all of the time and money that you’ve invested into your newly aligned teeth, by keeping them in place for many years to come. You will have the self-confidence to smile proudly and know that you have had the best possible treatment.
Permanent Retainers
Many orthodontists prefer to place a permanent bonded retainer behind your front teeth, either on the top or bottom or sometimes both. These are preferred due to the fact that they can be placed on your teeth and forgot about. There is no need to keep track of it, or worry about losing or cleaning it. They are the simplest to deal with long term, and they last can last for many years.
Removable Retainers
Many people do prefer removable retainers but there is a bit more maintenance that you need to be aware of if you choose to go this route.
- You must remove your retainer while you eat and drink.
- You must remember to wear as your orthodontist advised; most patients wear them all night.
- Remove when brushing your teeth and also brush the retainer.
- Retainers can break, so be careful with them.
In order to know what is the best method of caring for your smile after your Damon Smile braces are removed you should speak to Dr. Byron Diehl. You definitely want to protect your investment and smile!

So you’re about to get braces. Congratulations! You are taking a very smart step to improve the health of your teeth as well as get that killer smile in shape. But, as with anything that is good for you, there are a few things you will have to avoid while you “do your time.”
Some foods don’t do so great with braces. The foods listed below should be avoided while you are wearing your braces because they can pop the brackets and bend the wires. In other words, these foods can really ruin your day, and send you back to Diehl Orthodontics to get your braces repaired.
So before you hit the chair, hit the grocery and candy store – one last time – for:
- Beef jerky
- Raw carrots
- Taffy
- Pizza crust
- Bagels and other crusty bread
- Popcorn
- Hard candy
- Nuts and seeds
Dr. Byron Diehl and our staff will give you more information about eating with braces. Some foods, such as apples, are okay as long as you cut them in pieces first. Others, like pudding and pasta, are fine just as they are. But then there is “the list”: the foods that are a big no-no and should be avoided. It won’t be forever, so hang in there.
Your braces time will pass before you know it and you can resume more normal eating. But before the braces go on, enjoy these tasty treats. Go ahead and indulge!
